Starting My New Zealand Trek

FEBRUARY 3, 2019

Hello everyone. Well, I’ll be starting my new Trek in New Zealand this coming week and I’ll be flying out of Los Angeles tomorrow night, Monday, February 4. New Zealand is 21 hours ahead of our time zone in California, so I’ll actually will be landing there Wednesday, February 6.

Our friends, Brian and Shirley Thomas, who we met in New Zealand twenty-nine years ago, and have stayed in contact with all these years, are picking me up at the airport. They graciously will be my support team while on my trek by being my base station and supplying me with information, food, clothing, and equipment, etc., if needed.

I will only be staying with them for a short time in Whangapataoa, a little over an hour from Auckland, just long enough to get my data service and misc. supplies I may need. I will then fly to Invercargill, which is on the tip of the South Island. My goal is to complete my trek to the top tip of the North Island to Cape Reinga, approximately 1,200 to 1,300 miles. I have chosen to start on the South Island as it is the wetter and colder of the two islands, and so I’ll be finishing in the drier and warmer island as it approaches their fall.

I will be taking my Wheelie and will carry most of my food and supplies, and camp most of the way. At this point I do not have a clear idea of my route but will trek the route that allow me to pull my Wheelie.

As always, best wishes to all and I will post a new blog once I start.

Ted

Ted, I am so excited for you and your next adventure. I was just thinking about you and New Zealand this morning. One of my favorite special memories of my mom is the 4 days we spent together in NZ. I look forward to reading about your experiences.
