New Zealand, Day 54, Wednesday, April 3, 2019

Foxton to Sanson (20.21 miles/33.81 kms)

Today was uneventful day, yet a good day. Clear skies and cool weather was the forecast, and that is what I woke to this morning, perfect weather for trekking.

I miss sleeping in my tent, but getting up and packing in half the time surely is nice, and I was out the door by 8:00, even moving slowly.

I stopped at the cafe bakery, Sam’s, and picked up something for lunch, and possibly dinner tonight, as I wasn’t sure where I’d end up. The friendly owner, Sam, made it a point to introduce himself and tell me was from Cambodia. He had a lot of questions for me and even a sincere, have a good travel, hand shake. At times I wish I didn’t have the Wheelie as it attracts so much attention, but on the other hand, it has caused me meet a lot of nice people.

The road was mostly flat all the way to Sanson and there was, shockingly, a wide shoulder the whole way too. Traffic was very light, and in bunches, so it made for an easier trek today.

I stopped to eat some lunch and found a nice grassy area at the front of someone’s driveway. As I was eating, the farmer came up the driveway riding his mower. I started to get up and he motioned for me to stay as he mowed around me, but throwing cut grass all over me. As I was packing up he came back and introduced himself. He asked me a lot of questions, and then told me about his 600 acre dairy farm and the 750 cows. I am starting to think I know more about dairy farming now than the average person. That’s what I get for eating lunch on someone’s piece of grass.

I was hoping to find a place to camp before Sanson but it was solid farms for miles before town and no real open areas. Once in Sanson I didn’t want to take a chance on looking between here and Bulls, four miles away, so I decided to stay. I ended up at the Brooklyn Motels, where I had the option of pitching my tent or getting a room. Room it was, because I know it might be the tent the next few days.

I got here early enough again to get all my trekking chores done and have time to relax.

Tomorrow I will stop in Bulls and stock up on supplies as the next town, Hunterville, is over 25 miles from here, so I may camp.

Best wishes to all,

Ted

Please excuse the typos, spelling, grammar, etc., as I am typing this on my phone, and I am probably pretty tired.
