Oregon Day 21

Hello Everyone,

Today I spent the day resting and repacking all my food and equipment. Slept in late and watched some football, and went into town.

It is a tiny town but one with an interesting history. Apparently the valley was the passage area of several wagon trails to California and Oregon. The owner of the motel, who was born and raised here, is proud of his heritage here, which is fifth generation. His great, great, grandfather was the first white man born in the valley. Like so many of the little towns I have gone through it has the charm of small town America from the past. Even though I am walking, I would have passed through here not knowing much of the history of Adin had I not stayed here.

We went to the local and only market in town and found it such a nice surprise as it has that old country charm. It still has the appearance an old store from back in the day when the area was a booming ranching area. The floors are the original wood, and the refrigerator doors are still the original oak framed doors. The checkout is still the old style center counter. Though a small market, it had lots for choices for various foods and a little mixture of good quality arts and crafts and nick knacks. Going through town you can see the old houses from the 1800s and picture what it must have been like as the business hub of Lassen County because of the ranching wealth. Back in the late 1800s Adin was going to be the county seat but it was moved to Alturas, which became the bigger business hub. Now there is only one store, one gas station, one restaurant (Oney Frosty in Town), and of course, one motel.

I could actually spend more time here walking around, but then again I could have done that with so many of the towns I have had the joy of walking through. I think that every town or place has an interesting history if you stop and take the time find out about it.

Tomorrow I will start back up trekking to Lookout and then up Highway 91. It is suppose to be a fairly deserted stretch of highway until I hit Highway 139 again. Once on 139, I will head north to Klamath Falls Oregon. There aren’t any services from here until Newell, which is about 60 miles. I hope that I will find some water or that a nice motorist with water will stop to say hello again. I probably won’t have cell service for several days either, since there is none here now and I am using the motel wifi. I will update and send my blog when I get service.

I will be start back up tomorrow and stop at the market to pickup their homemade breakfast pastries or sandwiches. Mindee will be heading home too and it was so good to see her.

My goal at this point will be to make it to Klamath Falls, Oregon, and see how the plantar fasciitis in my left foot continues to trouble me. It has been good to give my feet and body a rest.

Please keep continue sending me your positive thoughts and prayers. Please excuse any typos, grammar, spelling, errors, etc.

Ted
